The Image

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

One thing that is unique about Smalltalk when compared with other software development tools, is that you are constantly working with a world of objects which contains, not only those objects that are part of your application, but also those that comprise development system itself.

This world is your Image.

You can think of it as like a "workspace" where the state of all your development tools and your application objects can be saved like a snapshot to disk. You may choose to run with all your development projects inside the same image or, alternatively, some people like to reserve a separate image for each project. In the end, it is up to you but, if you're not sure which way to go at first, we'd suggest keeping just one image file where you do all of your work. If you like, you can use File/Save Image as... to rename your working image with your own name.
