System Transcript

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

The System Transcript window acts as a log for notification messages from the development system. Many of the standard development tools use this facility but it is also available as a useful debugging aid when developing your own code.

Even when it is not visible, the Transcript remains in existence. You can display it at any time by opening the System Transcript icon in the System Folder or by choosing the Tools/System Transcript menu command in any of the development tools.

Note that, should you inadvertently destroy the Transcript programmatically, another will be automatically created for you.

Common Operations

In your Smalltalk code you can treat the Transcript as a writable Stream object identified by the Transcript global. For example, here is one way to write a trace message:

Transcript

       nextPutAll: 'Database file closed at ';
       display: Time now;
       cr.
